Home Bleaching (At-Home Teeth Whitening)

Home Bleaching is becoming increasingly popular in Hong Kong. For patients who wish to improve their smiles at home by removing yellow stains on their teeth, using at-home teeth whitening is a great method.

Dentists will customize unique trays for each patient and provide guidance on safely performing at-home teeth whitening. These take-home teeth whitening trays allow patients to comfortably whiten their teeth at home. Although the price of custom-made whitening trays is higher than regular over-the-counter whitening products, the results are more ideal.

Procedure For At-Home Teeth Whitening

  1. Place Whitening Gel Into The Custom Tray
Squeeze a continuous bead of gel into the custom tray, positioning it on the front or bottom half of the teeth. Each tray typically requires about half to one-third of the syringe of gel. Store any leftover whitening gel in a cool place for future use.
  2. Place The Tray
Place the tray into your mouth and gently tap it to ensure it fits snugly against both sides of your teeth. Wear it for the appropriate amount of time as directed by your dentist. Generally, gel concentrations range from 10% to 35%, with lower concentrations requiring longer wear times.
  3. Remove the tray and brush your teeth gently
Take out the tray, use a soft toothbrush to clean off any excess gel. Rinse your mouth twice, being careful not to swallow any gel.
  4. Clean the tray
Clean the tray with a toothbrush and room temperature water. Then, you can store it in your tray case and repeat your whitening treatment the next day, until you achieve the desired results. If you experience any significant sensitivity during the treatment, please discontinue the at-home whitening treatment and contact our healthcare provider.

How Should I Care For My Teeth During And After Whitening?

Avoid consuming staining beverages and foods such as coffee, tea, and red wine. During at-home teeth whitening treatment, avoid smoking. Clean and brush your teeth as usual after each daily whitening session.

How Long Does It Take For At-Home Teeth Whitening To Work?

Due to the lower concentration of whitening agents, it usually takes several days to weeks to see noticeable results. However, consistent use of whitening products and following the correct usage methods are key to achieving the best results.

How Soon Can I Eat After At-Home Whitening?

After at-home whitening, it is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes before eating to ensure the whitening agent is fully absorbed by the teeth. After eating, it is best to rinse with water to prevent food residue from affecting the whitening effect. Additionally, it is recommended to wait another 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth to avoid damaging the enamel, which may have softened due to acidic foods.

Do I Need To Brush My Teeth After At-Home Whitening?

It is not recommended to brush your teeth immediately after whitening, as the whitening agent may make the tooth surface more fragile, and brushing may cause damage to the teeth. It is advised to wait at least 30 minutes after whitening before brushing your teeth and use a gentle mouthwash to clean your teeth.
